full: "Please send me by Harlem Railroad to Chappaqua, Westchester Co.
N.Y. 500 smallest size Sole tile, 500 next larger [Sole tile] Send bill to
Tribune Office, N.Y." Greeley founded the "New York Tribune" in 1841 and
edited it until his death. He served in Congress to fill a vacancy (December 4,
1848-March 3, 1849) and was a friend and supporter of Lincoln. Greeley was the
unsuccessful nominee of the Liberal Republican and Democratic parties for
President against President Grant in 1872, dying on November 29, 1872, just 24
days after the election, before the Electoral College met. Soiled, lightly
creased with folds which touch signature. Mounting remnant at top edge of
signature side. Pinhead-size holes at cross folds. 1/8-inch separation at fold
at lower edge (all intact).
