HORACE GREELEY. ALS (twice): "Horace Greeley" and "H.G.", 2½p, front and verso, 7¾x10. New York, 1839 August 5. With integral leaf addressed by Greeley. To Augustus S. Porter, Detroit, Michigan. In part: "When with you some three weeks since, I intended to state thanks...I have a newspaper and a large business on my hands at present, which I can neither sell, lend, nor give away. To stop it is a thing impossible; to pay its debts without continuing it equally so. I am the responsible person in the eyes of all its creditors and most of its subscribers. I must, therefore, cling to it until I can make some disposal of my interest...." Greeley (1811-1872) published the "New Yorker" from 1834-1841. He founded the "New York Tribune" on April 10, 1841 and edited it until his death. He was the unsuccessful Liberal Republican Party and Democratic Party candidate against President Grant in 1872. Exhausted by campaigning, the 61-year-old newspaperman died on November 29, 1872, just 24 days after the election, before the Electoral College met. Folds, vertical fold touches "a" of "Horace". Creased. Nicked edges, slight separation at folds. Address leaf shows shaded, soiled folds, creased, worn edges.
