HORACE SCUDDER
A signed quote from the author and editor remarking on an American state being surrounded by fresh water, saying it is a perfect place for "clean living and pure politics". Extremely rare!
Autograph quotation signed: "Horace E. Scudder/Cambridge, Mass./26 March 1886", 4¼x3½. Quote in full: "What a fine thing it must be to live in a state almost entirely surrounded by fresh water! What constant suggestion of clean living and pure politics". American author Horace Scudder (1838-1902) is best known for his children's books, in particular his Bodley Books and the anthology The Children's Book. He was also a very successful editor, holding editing positions at The Atlantic Monthly, The Riverside Magazine, and as series editor for the "American Commonwealths Series" for Houghton Mifflin. However, despite his accomplishments as an editor and children's writers, one of his best remembered works is the very lengthy titled textbook A History of the United State of America Preceded By a Narrative of the Discovery and Settlement of North America and of the Events Which Led to the Independence of the Thirteen English Colonies for the Use of Schools and Academies. Heavily toned. Stain around out edges. Corners lightly worn and creased. Faint stains on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
