HORATIO KING
Buchanan Cabinet member congratulates 1880 Democratic nominee, W.S. Hancock.
ALS: "Horatio King", 2p, 4¼x6¾. Washington, 1880 June 25. To General W.S. Hancock, New York. In full: "Although not the pleasure of your personal acquaintance, I cannot avoid joining the great throng of gratified citizens in congratulating you on your nomination to the Presidency. Many years a quiet 'Looker-on in Vienna', I have no hesitation in saying that I think it is high time there should be a change of administration and that the reins should be placed in other than the hands of the present dominant party. The signs of the time plainly indicate that the people will so decide at the polls." At the Democratic National Convention held in Cincinnati from June 22-24, 1880,General Winfield Scott Hancock was nominated for President on the second ballot. In the November 2, 1880 election, Republican James A. Garfield defeated Hancock by 4.45 million to 4.44 million popular votes and 214-155 electoral votes; the states were evenly split, 19-19. Horatio King had served as Buchanan's Postmaster Generalfrom January 1 to March 3, 1861. Folds, not touching signature. Fine condition.
