HORTENSE RHEA
The Belgian actress quotes Beatrice from Much Ado About
Nothing, the role that helped her learn English. Dated 1886
Autograph quotation signed: "Rhea", in black ink, 4¼x3½.
Quote: "I was born to speak all mirth!" from Much Ado About
Nothing. Belgian actress Hortense Rhea (born Hortense Barbe Loret,
1844-1899), reportedly a striking beauty, began acting in 1865 at the
insistence of actor Charles Fechter as a way to make a career for herself.
She studied acting in Paris, making her debut in the play Fairy
Fingers. Rhea then had an interest in not only learning, but performing,
in English. She studied the text for the role of Beatrice in Much Ado
About Nothing until she felt confident in her skills, making her
English debut in 1881. She then traveled to America and performed for
several years to much popularity, despite the fact that her English was mostly
unintelligible. However, after falling ill in 1899, she decided to return to
France to recover, and passed away shortly after. Heavily toned. Corners
slightly worn. Stained on top margin. Otherwise, fine
condition.
