HOWARD COSELL
Shown, microphone in hand, trying to interview a sprawled Woody Allen
in Bananas
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Robert/With my best
wishes,/Howard Cosell". Color, 10x8. Shown with Woody Allen in a captioned
movie still from Bananas (1971). Howard Cosell (1918-1995)
first appeared on television in his own show, Sports Focus, a daily ABC
sports commentary show televised from June 1957-September 1958. From 1961, he
frequently appeared on ABC's Wide World of Sports. On September 21, 1970,
NFL Monday Night Football premiered on ABC. Cosell, Keith Jackson and Don
Meredith were the commentators. Cosell's outspoken defense of heavyweight boxing
champ Muhammad Ali, stripped of his title for refusing military service, was
vindicated by a unanimous Supreme Court ruling in Ali's favor. The "tell it
like it is" style of the controversial Cosell changed sports reporting
forever. In Bananas, as in many of his film and TV appearances,
Cosell played himself. Corners rounded. Lightly toned. Ink slightly smeared.
Sticker affixed on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
