"Happy New Year" in 1978. Dietz wrote hit songs like Moanin' Low,
Dancin' In the Dark, That's Entertainment and designed the MGM
lion logo!
Original Art Signed: "Howard Dietz/Happy New Year/1978" in
blue ink. 5x3 ruled card, ½x½ and ¼x¼ drawings, one surface. Red and blue ink
drawings. Dietz (1896-1983) was a versatile newspaper columnist,
publicist and music lyricist. With composer Arthur Schwartz, he wrote
musical comedies in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Dietz's hit songs
included Moanin' Low (1929), Dancin' In the Dark (1931)
and That's Entertainment (1953). He also wrote musical scores for
films, including Key Largo (1948) and The Bandwagon (1953). Need
more? He also designed the MGM lion logo and coined the studio's motto,
"Ars Gratia Artis". Dietz is enshrined in the Songwriters' Hall of Fame.
Lightly toned. Pen skipped in places while writing signature, which is slightly
shaky but legible. Otherwise, fine condition.
