"Autograph Of:" typed at upper margin. Howard Henry Baker, Sr. (1902-1964) was a Republican U.S. Representative from Tennessee from 1951 until his death in 1964. An attorney, newspaper publisher and banker, Baker had previously served in the Tennessee State House of Representatives (1929-1930), and he had been an unsuccessful candidate for Governor of Tennessee (1938) and the U.S. Senate (1940). His son, Howard Henry Baker, Jr. (born in 1925), was a Republican U.S. Senator from Tennessee from 1967-1985. The younger Baker, who chose not to run for re-election in 1984, served as Senate Minority Leader from 1977-1981 and Senate Majority Leader (1981-1985). An attorney and veteran of WWII, Baker, who was Chief of Staff to President Reagan from 1987-1988, sought the Republican Presidential nomination in 1980. He was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Japan in 2001. Baker's first wife was Joy Dirksen, the daughter of Illinois U.S. Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen; she died in 1993. His second wife, Nancy Landon Kassebaum, the daughter of Alfred Mossman Landon, was a U.S. Senator from Kansas from 1978-1997. Baker received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1984.
