HOWARD NEMEROV
The author responds to a fan's praise of his work
TLS: "Howard Nemerov", 1p, 6¾x10¼. St. Louis, Missouri, 1975 July 29. On his personal imprinted letterhead to "Dear Mrs Bisceglio". In full: "Thank you so much for your kindly note. It's especially nice to know that someone remembers the novels I wrote so long ago, even though I have for so many years abandoned novel-writing in favor of poetry and essays and stories. You make me realize something odd about myself: I don't doodle, possibly because I almost always write at the typewriter. So about parts of the world - the hills of Vermont, around Bennington, where I lived for eighteen years, and where all our children were born. Wellfleet on Cape Cod, and Folly Cove near Rockport on Cape Ann, where we spent some wonderful summer months...and St Louis, where we are as comfortable as can be, and able to afford the real estate as we couldn't in the East. Thanks again for writing, and all good wishes to you". American poet, novelist and critic Howard Nemerov (1920-1991) won the 1978 Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award and the Bollingen Prize for The Collected Poems of Howard Nemerov. Nemerov, who was known for his witty, often gloomy works, published novels, short stories, essays and plays as well as numerous volumes of poetry, and he was poetry consultant to the Library of Congress from 1963-1964 and Poet Laureate of the U.S. from 1988-1990. Nemerov had been a former pilot during WWII and a teacher before becoming a writer. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Fine condition.
