Signature: "Howard W. Cannon/U.S. Senator Nev." in blue ink, 3½x2. Howard W. Cannon (1912-2002) was a decorated major general and US senator. Cannon, born in St. George, Utah on January 6, 1912, graduated from Dixie State College and then subsequently graduated from the University of Arizona's law school. He was a lawyer in Arizona, Nevada, and Utah before going off to fight in World War II, where he served as a bomber pilot. His time in the military earned him many awards, including the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, 3 Air Medals, and a Purple Heart. After retiring from the military, Cannon was elected as city attorney for Las Vegas, Nevada and eventually went on to be their senator from 1959 to 1983.
