Howard Wilkinson Jackson signed this typed letter on his personalized stationery as Mayor of Baltimore in 1938 to wish the recipient a happy New Year. A rare and desirable item.
Typed letter signed "Howard W Johnson" as Mayor of Balitmore in blue ink. 1 page, 8¼x10¾, on Jackson's personalized stationery as Mayor of Baltimore. Dec. 27, 1938. Addressed to Miss Emeline Theresa Meisel, Clintonville, Wisconsin. In full: "Dear Miss Meisel: At the request of Mr. Henry Otto Meisel, I am writing you this letter. Am glad to extend my best wishes to you for the New Year. Yours very truly,". Democrat Jackson (1877-1960) was Mayor of Baltimore, Maryland (1923-1927 and 1931-1943). After leaving office, he supported the integration of Baltimore's Peabody Conservatory in 1949. Jackson was also a Maryland delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1916, 1924, 1928 and 1940. Lightly toned and creased. Signature has bled lightly in places but is legible. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
