Autograph Letter signed: "Herbert Herkomer". 1p. 4½x7, personal letterhead. Lululaund, Bushey, Herts, 22 January 1901. In full: "Dear Duchess. As I wired I should not be back from Oldham until afternoon of Tuesday therefore please come Wednesday 30th in the morning- Kind Regards Yours sincerely" Bavarian-born British artist, architect, playwright and composer Hubert von Herkomer (1849-1914) is best known for his portraits, whose subjects include Wagner, Ruskin and Lord Kelvin, and his painting The Last Muster (1874). Also an engraver and wood carver, Herkomer was a pioneer producer/director of British silent films, establishing his own studio in Bushey, where he founded a school of art in 1883. Herkomer, who was a Professor of fine art at Oxford from 1889-1894, was knighted in 1907. Pencil notes (unknown hand) at upper and lower margins. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
