Maxim signed this typed letter to Carl E. Schultze of New York on his personalized stationery in 1910. This was a book, not on explosives or chemistry - fields in which he made the greatest impact - but on language and poetry.
Typed letter signed "Hudson Maxim", 1p, 8¼x10¾, on Maxim's personalized stationery from Maxim Park in Landing, New Jersey, 1910 September 1. Addressed to Carl E. Schultze, New York City, New York. In full: "My dear Mr. Schultze:- I am sending you today, by mail, the long-promised complimentary copy of my new book, 'The Science of Poetry and the Philosophy of Language.' [not included] This is the first time, I believe, that the subject of poetry has had scientific and impartial treatment. I believe that the book discovers very important fundamental truths, and that it will shorten the path and lessen the labor and expense in the acquirement of some very useful knowledge to men and women of letters, teachers and public speakers, and will lead many out of a maze of misconception. After you have read the book, I should be very glad to know how you like it. Yours faithfully," Hudson Maxim began his career in armaments and explosives in his brother Hiram's gun factory in New England. In 1888, he began developing new explosives and by 1890. Maxin invented a new smokeless powder. He helped his brother found a dynamite and powder factory in New Jersey that year: the following year, they parted company. In 1892, he began his own munitions factory in New Jersey, the heart of the United States' manufacturing at that time, where he developed a smokeless cannon powder. Maxim sold his company to E.I. DuPont de Nemours & Company in 1897: however, he remained as a consulting engineer. Later accomplishments include shock resistant torpedoes, delayed-action fuses and a propulsion substance fro torpedoes. These inventions greatly aided the Allied effort in World War I. Machine guns manufactured by his brother changed the weaponry of warfare for all time. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Folded once horizontally and twice vertically. Light tear in left edge along fold. Otherwise, fine condition.
