6¼x8½. No place, 1967 November 15. On official U.S. Senate letterhead. Addressed to "Mr.
Benjamin Mandel/ Research Director/ Subcommittee on Internal Security/ Senate Committee on
the Judiciary/ Washington, D.C." Written to: "Dear Ben". In full: "I regret that my schedule will
not permit me to attend the reception bidding you farewell./ Please accept my heartfelt thank for
your dedicated service to the subcommittee on Internal Security. Your intimate knowledge of
Communist strategy and tactics has been valuable to us./ With personal best wishes for your
continued health and happiness, I am/ Sincerely". Hugh Doggett Scott Jr. (1900-1994) was a
Republican congressman (1941-1945, 1947-1959) and U.S. senator (1959-1977) from
Pennsylvania, who served as Republican Whip in 1969 and Senate Minority Leader from
1969-1977. Scott was also Chairman of the Republican National Committee from
1948-1949. Ben Mandel was a longtime government employee who worked for the State
Department and later for committees in the U.S. House (House Un-American Activities
Committee) and Senate (Senate Internal Security Sub-Committee). Lightly toned. Two
horizontal mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
