HUGH HERBERT
Signed autograph letter on his personal stationery (1936), agreeing to help Hollywood minister Neal Dodd
Autograph Letter signed: "Hugh Herbert", 1 page, 7¼x10½. No place, 1936 September 5. To "Dear Mr. Hughes", in full: "Received your letter regarding Father Dodd - and I will be very happy to do whatever is possible to assist him. You can use my name by all means. Sincerely". Vaudeville and film comedian Hugh Herbert (1885-1952) played flustered characters with his trademark silly giggle. He starred in B-pictures and played supporting roles in major ones. He was often caricatured in Loony Tunes cartoons of the 1930s and 1940s. One of his best remembered roles was as a nutty detective in Hellzapoppin' (1941). His brother, Tom Herbert, played similarly goofy comic roles. Herbert also wrote many plays and script. The "Father Dodd" mentioned in the letter was certainly Neal Dodd (1878-1966), Episcopal Minister at the Church of St. Mary's in Hollywood. Dodd portrayed a minister in over 200 films, including such major hits as It Happened One Night (1934), Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) and The Killers (1946). He also performed many real weddings and funerals for Hollywood actors, and helped raise money for actors' charities, especially the Motion Picture Relief Fund. It was probably this kind of charitable cause which Herbert was agreeing to help. Normal mailing folds. Staple at upper left corner. 1½" stain across top margin area. Otherwise, fine condition.
