HUGH McCULLOCH
Small slip of paper signed and dated by Hugh McCulloch in 1868 as
President Andrew Johnson's Secretary of the Treasury. McCulloch was Secretary of
the Treasury under three presidents.
Signature:"Hugh McCulloch/April 25. 1868". 4¾x1½,
rounded top right corner. McCulloch was Secretary of the Treasury
under Presidents Abraham Lincoln (1865), Andrew Johnson (1865-1869)
and Chester A. Arthur (1884-1885). He tried to return the U. S. to the
gold standard by withdrawing Civil War-era paper money from circulation, but
public opposition prevented him from doing so. Lightly toned, stained and
creased. Torn from binding at left edge. Bottom edge is irregular. Light
discoloration along top and right edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
