HUGH McCULLOCH
Small slip of paper signed and dated by Hugh McCulloch in 1866 as
President Andrew Johnson's Secretary of the Treasury. McCulloch was Secretary of
the Treasury under three presidents.
Signature:"Hugh McCulloch/May 21th 1866". 4¾x2.
McCulloch was Secretary of the Treasury under Presidents Abraham
Lincoln (1865), Andrew Johnson (1865-1869) and Chester A. Arthur
(1884-1885). He tried to return the U. S. to the gold standard by
withdrawing Civil War-era paper money from circulation, but public opposition
prevented him from doing so. Lightly toned, stained and rippled. Top and bottom
edges are irregular. Light discoloration along right edge. Otherwise in fine
condition.
