Small card signed by Hugh McCulloch, Secretary of the Treasury under
three presidents
Signature:"Hugh McCulloch/January 4th". Pencil
notations on verso in unknown hand. 2½x1 card. McCulloch was Secretary
of the Treasury under Presidents Abraham Lincoln (1865), Andrew Johnson
(1865-1869) and Chester A. Arthur (1884-1885). He tried to return
the U. S. to the gold standard by withdrawing Civil War-era paper money from
circulation, but public opposition prevented him from doing so. Lightly toned,
soiled and bowed. Date is cut off at right edge. Otherwise in fine
condition.
