HUGH McCULLOCH
Small slip of paper signed by Hugh McCulloch, Secretary of the Treasury under three presidents
Signature: "H McCulloch". Pencil notations under signature in unknown hand. 6¾x3¼, rounded top right corner. McCulloch was Secretary of the Treasury under Presidents Abraham Lincoln (1865), Andrew Johnson (1865-1869) and Chester A. Arthur (1884-1885). He tried to return the U. S. to the gold standard by withdrawing Civil War-era paper money from circulation, but public opposition prevented him from doing so. Lightly toned and creased. Neatly torn from binding at left edge. Bottom edge is irregular. Light discoloration along top and right edges. Otherwise in fine condition.
