Clipped closing from a manuscript letter signed by Hugh McCulloch, Secretary
of the Treasury under three presidents
Clipped signature: "Hugh McCulloch" as Secretary of the
Treasury. Pencil notations on verso in unknown hand. 4¼x1¾ ruled paper with
beveled corners. Clipped from a manuscript letter or document. Manuscript
salutation: "I am. very respectfully". McCulloch was
Secretary of the Treasury under Presidents Abraham Lincoln (1865),
Andrew Johnson (1865-1869) and Chester A. Arthur (1884-1885). He
tried to return the U. S. to the gold standard by withdrawing Civil
War-era paper money from circulation, but public opposition prevented him from
doing so. Lightly toned and soiled. Manuscript writing, but not signature, has
bled lightly but is legible. Manuscript writing touches signature. Show-through
from paper loss on verso (does not touch signature). Mounting residue on verso
(no show-through). Irregular top edge. Light dent at bottom edge. Otherwise in
fine condition.
