Manuscript letter signed "HMcCulloch" as President Andrew Johnson's Secretary of the Treasury. Black ink notations in top right corner and lead pencil notations in op left corner and on verso, all in unknown hand. 1 page, 6¾x9¾, on ruled U. S. Treasury Department stationery. Oct. 14, 1868. Addressed to Alex Delman, Director of the Bureau of Statistics. In full: "Sir: In accordance with the requirements of law and the regulations of the Department you will please transmit to me as soon as possible, prior to the 1st proximo, the annual report of the opera=tions of your bureau for the past fiscal year, end=ing June 30th, 1868. Respectfully Yours". McCulloch was Secretary of the Treasury under Presidents Abraham Lincoln (1865), Andrew Johnson (1865-1869) and Chester A. Arthur (1884-1885). He tried to return the U. S. to the gold standard by withdrawing Civil War-era paper money from circulation, but public opposition prevented him from doing so. Lightly toned, stained, soiled and creased. Mounting remnants on verso (not show-through). Folded once vertically and twice horizontally and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
