HUGH O'BRIAN
A signed candid 5x7 photograph of the youthful actor shown reading a script or a contract,
inscribed in blue ink
Inscribed Photograph signed: "Allan you sure take/ a fine picture-better I should/ never have
grown hair! Thanks/ again for everything/ your friend/ Hugh" B/w, 5x7. Although he appeared
in several films in the early 1950s, Hugh O'Brian (1925-2016) did not become a star until
he earned the title role in the popular TV series The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp
(1955-1961). This show, which debuted the same year that Gunsmoke and Cheyenne did,
helped usher in a new era of Westerns. For many years after this series, O'Brian resisted
offers of Western roles, gradually relenting to appear in John Wayne's last film, The
Shootist (1976) and then in TV recreations of his Earp role, including The Gambler Returns
(1991). O'Brian starred in another shorter lived series, Probe (1972-1973). Other productions
he appeared in include Twins (1988) and Old Soldiers (2016). In 1954, the actor won the
Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer. The actor founded Hugh O'Brian Youth
Leadership (HOBY) in 1958 and it continues to be an organization that develops leadership
skills in high school students across the country. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso. Corners
worn and lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
