Autograph letter signed: "Henry Seton Merriman" in black ink. 1 page, 4½x7. September 2, 1902. Pall Mall, London, England. In full: "Dear Sir, In reply to your letter of the 19th ult. [ultima mense] asking for a photograph of myself. I regret that I am unable to supply you. Yours faithfully". Hugh Stowell Scott (1861-1903), who used the pen name Henry Seton Merriman, was an English novelist. After beginning his career as an underwriter at Lloyd's of London (an insurance market), he decided on a life of traveling and writing novels, earning great popularity with his exotic novels. His pieces include Young Mistley (1888), The Slave of the Lamp (1892), In Kedar's Tents (1897), Grey Lady, Isle of Unrest (1900), and The Last Hope (1904). Scott died of appendicitis at the age of 41, leaning his fortune to author Evelyn Beatrice Hall. Normal mailing folds. Left edge frayed. Toned. Soiled throughout. Ink sports throughout.
