HUGHIE DIAMOND
The popular vaudeville actor pens his name in blue ink on this album leaf
Signature: “Hughie Diamond” in blue ink, 6½x5¼. Hughie Diamond was an actor and
singer popular on the vaudeville circuit during the first half of the 20th century. Discovered
by Teddy Joyce in Glasgow, Diamond went on to appear in many American and British
shorts including Crooner's Crooner in 1939 and in a British Pathé pictorial singing “The
Gypsy”. In addition to performing, Diamond oftentimes produced and staged numbers
featuring cheerful songs and showy dance numbers for vaudeville shows, one of such being “A
Perfect Setting”. Signers on verso merit further research. Fainting staining extending
downward from top edge, affecting ascenders of “Hughie” and the “D” of diamond. Lightly
toned. Right edge irregular from being neatly torn from album. Otherwise, fine condition.
