HUGHIE GREEN
Brief letter from the British television host saying he will be unable to be a judge for a Canadian beauty contest
Typed letter signed: "Hughie Green", in blue ink, 5x8. October 2, 1964. Witton, Middlesex. In full: "Dear Mr. Donald Grant, Thank you for your letter. I expect to be in Canada on this date and so, yet again, I am afraid I am unable to join the panel of judges for your "Miss Thames Valley" Contest. This goes with my apologies for having to continually disappoint you on this issue. Yours sincerely". Following a career as a child actor, Hughie Green (1920-1997) first gained mainstream popularity with the ITV quiz show Double Your Money (1955), hosting the series from 1955 to 1968. The successful hosting gig helped pave the way for Green to host several other series, including Opportunity Knocks (1956), Moon Movies (1977), and Val Parnell's Sunday Night at the London Palladium (1957). However, Green's right wing political beliefs began to conflict with his shows, especially the hit show Opportunity Knocks. After using the show several times as a soapbox to discuss his political views, the broadcasting network for the show cancelled the series, despite its popularity and high ratings. Green still hosted several shows for a number of years, though he was unable to achieve his prior success, and eventually strayed away from the media. Light surface creases. Corners lightly worn. Normal mailing fold. Fine condition.
