Portuguese-American Medeiros (1915-1983), born Humberto Sousa Medeiros, was Archbishop of Boston (1970-1983) and a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church (1973-1983) Born in the Azores, his family emigrated to the United States in 1931; he was ordained a priest in 1946. Medeiros was known for his criticism of capitalism and racism. He also made waves from his opposition to abortion. In 1974, he told a TV reporter that no priest in his archdiocese would baptize the son of a woman who supported a proposed abortion clinic. Six years later, just before the 1980 Democratic primaries, he targeted Congressional candidates James Shannon and Barney Frank, both known for their support of abortion, by having his priests read a pastoral letter to their parishes that read, in part: "Those who make abortion possible by law cannot separate themselves from the guilt which accompanies this horrendous crime and deadly sin." As a cardinal, Medeiros participated in the 1978 papal conclaves that elected Popes John Paul I and II.
