HUME CRONYN and JESSICA TANDY
The husband and wife sign their names on a program from the Country Playhouse
Program signed: "Hume Cronyn", "Jessica Tandy", in blue ink, 20 pages, 5¼x7¼ affixed to a 9x12 sheet. A program for a presentation of Famous Artists at Country Playhouse, 1958. Canadian actor HUME CRONYN (1911-2003) entered film in 1943 and was nominated for an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor the following year for The Seventh Cross. He worked frequently with Alfred Hitchcock, adapting plays and novels for the screen and acting in both Hitchcock films and TV episodes. Married to Oscar-winning actress Jessica Tandy from 1942 until her death in 1994, Cronyn co-starred often with her. The couple was especially popular as married senior citizens in such films as Cocoon (1985), as well as stage and TV versions of The Gin Game. Cronyn remained active after Jessica's death, being mistaken for Santa Claus in Off Season (2001). Possessing a great dignity tempered by the humorous sparkle in her clear blue eyes, JESSICA TANDY (1909-1994) was among the grande dames of stage and screen. She earned Tony awards for the premier of A Streetcar Named Desire (1947) and The Gin Game (1978). She won an Oscar as Best Actress for Driving Miss Daisy (1989), and won her third Tony for her work in 1983's Foxfire (she would win an Emmy in 1987 for the same role in the play's televised version). In 1942, she married Canadian stage and screen actor Hume Cronyn and they remained professional and personal partners until Tandy's death in 1994. Corners lightly worn and creased. Pin hole in top margin of program. Lightly soiled on edges of program. Toned. Light surface creases. Toned on margins of sheet. Ink notes (unknown hand) on top right corner of sheet. Otherwise, fine condition.
