1960 November 1. On sheet imprinted with his name to Miss Radie
Harris, New York, N.Y. Begins: "Radie dear". In full:
"I did try to reach you on Tuesday morning and again on Wednesday following
your party. Busy, busy, busy. I've been out of town since. It was a lovely
party. Thank you for asking me. Sybil Burton and I closed the Eden
Roc. I don't know what the right birthday present will be, but I'm
determined to find you one which will arrive before Christmas. I'll see Jess
and Dick Burton this week-end in Boston. Love". In 1960, Cronyn
starred in one feature film, Sunrise at Campobello, and he made guest
appearances on television in Play of the Week (in a production of Juno
and the Paycock) and The Barbara Stanwyck Show. Canadian actor
HUME CRONYN (1911-2003), who entered films in 1943, was nominated for
an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor the following year for The Seventh
Cross. He worked frequently with Alfred Hitchcock, adapting plays and
novels for the screen and acting in both Hitchcock films and TV episodes.
Married to Oscar-winning actress Jessica Tandy from 1942 until her death
in 1994, Cronyn often co-starred with her. The couple was especially popular
as married senior citizens in such films as Cocoon (1985), as well as
the stage and TV versions of The Gin Game. Cronyn remained active after
Jessica's death, being mistaken for Santa Claus in Off Season (2001).
RADIE HARRIS (1904-2001) was a long-time entertainment journalist for
the "Hollywood Reporter". She wrote her "Broadway Ballyhoo" column
from 1940 to the 1990s. Harris, who was also the talent coordinator for
the 1943 film, Stage Door Canteen, received a special citation of
merit from the Publicists Guild of America in 1982. Slightly creased with
fold, not at signature. Fine condition.
