HUMPHREY BOGART and CHESTER MORRIS
Small informal photograph of Humphrey Bogart and Chester
Morris.
Informal Photograph signed: "Humphrey Bogart" and "Chester
Morris". B/w, 3¼x4¼. HUMPHREY BOGART (1899-1957) began his acting
career in 1920 while working as a road company manager. He began to act on
Broadway in 1922 and appeared in 17 plays, his last in 1935. Bogart appeared in
nine films (1930-1934) in between his Broadway roles. He portrayed Duke
Mantee in Robert E. Sherwood's The Petrified Forest which opened on
Broadway on January 7, 1935, closing after 197 performances. Bogart reprised his
role in the 1936 film costarring Leslie Howard and Bette Davis. He
established his image as a tough guy with a heart in films like High
Sierra (1941), Casablanca (1942) and Key Largo (1948). Bogie's
role in The African Queen earned him the 1952 Academy Award for Best
Actor. CHESTER MORRIS (1901-1970) also began his career on Broadway,
appearing in ten plays between 1918-1928 before going to Hollywood. He returned
to Broadway for leads in Blue Denim (1958), Advise and Consent
(1960) and The Subject Was Roses (1964). Chester Morris was appearing
as Lieutenant Commander Queeg in a stage production of The Caine Mutiny Court
Martial at the Bucks County (Pa.) Playhouse at the time of his death from a
barbiturate overdose. In one of his last performances, Humphrey Bogart had
portrayed Queeg in The Caine Mutiny and was nominated for the 1955
Academy Award for Best Actor for his role. Bogart and Morris were friends
but never costarred in the same film or play. Adequate contrast on Bogart
signature. Overall, fine condition.
