Original Artwork titled "Slugger" and signed "LeRoy Nieman '87" 17 x 23.
This distinctive work from the most famous name in sports art was apparently either
commissioned by or gifted to Dykstra by Neiman and captures "Nails" in the distinctive
pinstriped uniform of that glorious World Championship era. The painting is titled "The Slugger"
and autographed by Neiman in pencil at bottom right.
LeRoy Neiman (1921-2012) is best known for his brilliantly colored, energetic
illustrations. Based in New York City, he is recognized as the consummate sports artist of the
20th century. In 1972 he was named the official artist for the Olympic Games. He was
designated the outstanding sports artist in America by the Amateur Athletic Union (1976) and
was given the Olympic Artist of the Century Award in 1979, and Sport Artist of the Year
Award in 2007.
Len "Nails" Dykstra played outfield for the New York Mets from 1985 to 1989,
participating in the World Championship. With the Philadelphia Phillies (1989-1996) he
reached the World Series again, this time in a losing effort against the Toronto Blue Jays. An
All-Star in 1990, 1994 and 1995, Dykstra led the league in hits in 1990 (192) and 1993
(194) and runs in 1993 (143). After retiring from baseball, Dykstra opened a chain of car wash
and lube shops and published a magazine advising professional athletes on how to manage their
money however, he filed for bankruptcy in 2009.
