Autograph Sentiment Signed: “Ian Whyte/ Best Wishes” 4½x3½. Paper also contains a 1¾x2¼
captioned clipping of the conductor pictured conducting the BBC Scottish Orchestra. Ian
Whyte (1901-1960) was a Scottish conductor and composer who founded the BBC
Scottish Symphony Orchestra. While attending the Royal College of Music, Whyte studied
under Stanford and Ralph Vaughan Williams. In addition to conducting, Whyte produced
many of his own compositions, one of the more notable being the ballet “Donald of the
Burthens” (1951). Much of his music was influenced by Scottish themes and folk tunes.
