IF I HAD MY WAY MOVIE CAST: CO-SIGNED BY BING CROSBY and GLORIA JEAN
Smiling photograph of the two stars of If I Had My Way, the
second film for child actress Jean, who had been picked to be a successor to
Deanna Durbin.
Photograph signed: "Gloria Jean" and "Bing
Crosby". B/w with sepia hue, 7½x9½. Inscription and signature in unknown
hand between the signatures of the two stars. Crosby and child actress Gloria
Jean appeared together in If I Had My Way (Jean's second film) in
1940. HARRY LILLIS "BING" CROSBY (1904-1977) won the 1944 Academy
Award for Best Actor for Going My Way. He was also nominated for
Best Actor Oscars for The Bells of St. Mary's (1945) and The
Country Girl (1954). Known for his relaxed "crooning" style of
singing, Crosby recorded more than 1,600 songs that sold at least 500
million copies. His 1942 single of "White Christmas" sold more than 30
million copies worldwide and was the best-selling single in any music category
for more than 50 years. In 1939, Universal studios, searching for a possible
successor to their juvenile singing star, Deanna Durbin, cast actress GLORIA
JEAN (born Gloria Jean Schoonover) in The Under-Pup, an inexpensive
comedy-drama set in an Interlochen-style musical camp. The film was a hit, and
Jean was signed to a Universal contract. Although the actress made 39
films, mostly in the 1940s and 1950s, including Never Give a Sucker an
Even Break (1941) with W.C. Fields, her career was not as carefully
monitored as Durbin's; allegedly, the studio had problems dealing with Jean's
mother and surreptitiously punished her by sticking her daughter in second-rate
roles. Jean also made occasional guest appearances on television, including
roles on Death Valley Days (1954) and Annie Oakley (1955), before
retiring from acting. Worthy of further research. Ink slightly beaded at
Crosby's signature. Lightly creased and soiled at blank margins and corners.
Minor surface creases and smudges (not evident head on). Mounting remnants on
verso (no show through). Overall, fine condition.
