IGNACY JAN PADEREWSKI
This letter to a friend is signed by the Polish composer and political figure
Autograph letter signed: " I J Paderewski", 1p, 4½x7. On personal letterhead. No place, no date. To "My dear Mr Palmer". In French, loosely translated: "I must go out tomorrow morning. I would be glad to see you Tuesday morning around ten o'clock." Polish pianist and composer Ignacy Paderewski (1860-1941) made his professional debut in Vienna in 1887 and quickly established himself as an interpreter of Schumann, Chopin, Liszt and Beethoven. He wrote the piano piece Legende Op. 16 in 1888, and his other works include Minuet in G and the opera, Manru. The virtuoso pianist was also a philanthropist and Polish patriot. Paderewski interrupted his concert career in 1919 to serve as Prime Minister and Foreign Minister and in 1940 to serve as President of the Polish Parliament in exile in Paris. Mounting remnants show through at top, affecting printed address but not text. Two pinholes at bottom center. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
