Photograph signed: "yours truly/I J Paderewski" on image. Sepia, 4¼x6½ overall, image 4x5¾ (two surfaces). Polish pianist and composer Ignacy Paderewski (1860-1941) made his professional debut in Vienna in 1887 and quickly established himself as an interpreter of Schumann, Chopin, Liszt and Beethoven. He wrote the piano piece Legende Op. 16 in 1888, and his other works include Minuet in G and the opera, Manru. The virtuoso pianist was also a philanthropist and Polish patriot. Paderewski interrupted his concert career in 1919 to serve as Prime Minister and Foreign Minister and in 1940 to serve as President of the Polish Parliament in exile in Paris. On verso: "The London Stereoscopic Company/Photographers/to Her Majesty/106, Regent Street, W./and 54, Cheapside E.C." and six line copyright notice. As the photograph was taken by "Photographers to Her Majesty" and Her Majesty Queen Victoria died on January 22, 1901, this photograph was taken before that date. Image soiled with diagonal crease at upper right corner and border soiled. Verso lightly stained. Otherwise, fine condition.
