ILONA MASSEY
A vintage 3x5 candid photo of the starlet wearing an ankle length velvet coat, holding a leather purse
Photograph signed: "Ilona Massey," in green ink. B/w, 3x5 image, 3½x5½ overall (one surface). Candid photo. Ilona Massey (1910-1974), born Ilona Hajmássy in Budapest, was an American actress with 23 TV shows and films to her credit. Massey was born into poverty, and paid for singing lessons with her earnings as a dressmaker's apprentice. She sang in the Vienna State Opera and made her film premiere in a 1935 Austrian film, Der Himmel auf Erden. She premiered in Hollywood in Rosalie (1937) and was soon cast in three Nelson Eddy movies - including what was reportedly her favorite of her films, Balalaika (1939). She went on to star in Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man, as a femme fatale in the Marx Brothers' Love Happy and on Broadway in Ziegfeld Follies of 1943. She moved to TV in 1950 and hosted her own variety show in 1953. Massey was a passionate anti-communist, especially after the 1956 uprisings in her native Hungary, and reportedly once picketed the United Nations when Nikita Khrushchev was visiting. This photograph is from the collection of Francis and Violet Zane, Hawaii natives who moved to California in the 1920's. Francis Zane had a job at the historic Curran Theater and the San Francisco Opera House, which is where he began his massive collection, with photographs and materials ranging from the 1920's to 1960's. The location and luck of his occupation would land him smack dab in the middle of the celebrity world, allowing him to capture some of the most unique and interesting pieces of Hollywood History. Lightly toned. Corners slightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
