Andy Devine and Una Merkel sign a vintage publicity still of them in

Photograph signed: "Andy Devine" and "Sincerely/Una
Merkel". These two character actors provide comic relief in this film based
on a novel by Donald Henderson Clarke. DEVINE (1905-1977), who first
appeared in silent films, was afraid that his rasping voice, the result of a
childhood injury, would exclude him from the talkies. On the contrary, it helped
make him the quintessential comic sidekick, first in films to Richard
Arlen (1939-1941) and Roy Rogers (late 1940s), then on TV to Guy
Madison's Wild Bill Hickok (1951-1958), remembered for his line,
"Hey, Wild Bill! Wait for me." He hosted a popular children's TV program in the
late 1950s and early 1960s. Devine was also a regular on Jack Benny's radio show
from 1937. MERKEL (1903-1986) began in silent films. Comic roles were her
specialty. She was nominated for an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress near
the end of her career (Summer and Smoke, 1961). Vintage photo. Two

damage. Worn at edges, with ½" vertical tear in lower margin.
