Sepia toned photograph (4¼x5¾) of the German soprano, signed and dated 1962
Photograph signed: "Inge Borkh/1962", in black ink, Sepia toned 4¼x5¾. German operatic soprano Inge Borkh (b. 1917) was known for her dramatic interpretations, often considered the first "singing actress" instead of just an opera vocalist. Borkh made her debut in 1940 in Lucerne, Switzerland, and remained in the country until her 1951 performance of Magda in The Consul which brought her international success. From there, Borkh began traveling across the world, performing in opera houses in Berlin, London, New York, and San Francisco, among others. Although she performed well in all of her wells, she was praised for her portrayals of Strauss' Salome and Elektra. Although she was never captured on film, many of Bork's performances can be heard on CD. She retired from opera in 1973 and pursued a career in traditional acting. Corners and edges slightly worn. Some ink in signature smeared, but clearly legible. Signature in poor contrast. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
