In full: "Many thanks for sending me your book 'April Snow'. It's going to be a pleasure to read it now, when my vacation comes up! Best regards!" Upper right corner (1¼x2 inches) missing. ½-inch tear on right edge. Lightly creased. Mounting tape remnant shows through lightly at blank upper margin. Text and signature are in fine condition. Accompanied by 9x4¼ airmail envelope addressed in signer's hand to Miss Budd. Postmark unreadable, but bearing Italian stamps. Ink note (unknown hand) in upper left corner: "sent 1st ed. April Snow 7-11-55." Bergman won Best Actress Academy Awards in 1944 (Gaslight) and 1956 (Anastasia) and a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1974 (Murder on the Orient Express). She was nominated for Best Actress Academy Awards in 1943 (For Whom the Bell Tolls), 1945 (The Bells of St. Mary's), 1948 (Joan of Arc) and 1978 (Autumn Sonata). Bergman was married to Italian film director Robert Rossellini - their relationship not popular with movie fans of the era - from 1950 to 1957. Lillian Budd's April Snow is the first book in a fiction trilogy about three generations of Swedish-Americans in Chicago. Two items.
