INGRID BERGMAN
The Academy Award winning actress responds to a letter saying
"Many thanks for sending me your book... I must admit that it is not the type
of picture that I would feel inclined to do"
Typed Letter signed: "Ingrid Bergman", 1p, 6x8½. Santa
Marinella (Italy), 1955 August 24. To Mrs. Lillian Budd, Lombard, Illinois.
In full: "Many thanks for sending me your book. I have already read it
and although I think it is very well written, I must admit that it is not the
type of picture that I would feel inclined to do. With all best wishes and
greetings, Yours sincerely". At the time she wrote this letter, Swedish-born
actress Ingrid Bergman was still struggling to return to the favor of movie
audiences. In 1950, she had accepted Roberto Rossellini's offer of the lead role
in Stromboli. During the production, the actress and director fell in
love and she became pregnant with his child while she was still married to her
first husband, Swedish doctor Peter Lindstrom. Although she married Rossellini
shortly after divorcing Lindstrom, the damage had been done. Stromboli
was banned in many markets and boycotted in others and the actress found herself
and her work shunned by audiences. It was not until 1957, when she made
Anastasia, that she made a successful comeback. Earlier in her career,
Bergman had won an Academy Award for Best Actress for Gaslight
(1944); her performance in Anastasia earned her a second
Oscar, and she would later win a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award
for Murder on the Orient Express (1974). Among her other notable
films are Intermezzo (1936), Casablanca (1942), For Whom the
Bell Tolls (1943), Spellbound (1945), The Inn of the Sixth
Happiness (1958) and The Yellow Rolls-Royce (1965). Affixed at upper
edge to original typed envelope, Italian stamp affixed. Light show through of
flap at upper portion of letter. Both letter and envelope are lightly creased.
Overall, fine condition.
