INGRID BJONER
Small b/w photo of soprano Ingrid Bjoner as Elsa from Wagner's Lohengrin, signed "With best wishes" in blue ink. Lohengrin's Elsa was Bjoner's debut role at the Metropolitan Opera in 1962.
Inscribed photograph signed "With best wishes to/Joseph Shapiro/Ingrid Bjoner" in blue ink. B/w, 3½x5½ overall, 3¼x4½ image, one surface, printed on cardstock. Captioned: "Ingrid Bjoner/Elsa in Lohengrin/Metropolitan Opera/New York". Lohengrin's Elsa was Bjoner's debut role at the Metropolitan Opera in 1962. She performed that role numerous times at the Met in 1962 and from 1966 to 1968. Bjoner (1927-2006), also known as "Die Bjoner", was one of Norway's premiere sopranos. Bjoner was known especially for her interpretations of Strauss and Wagner; her performance of Isolde from Wagner's Tristan und Isolde at the Bayreuth Festival reportedly earned her three-quarters of an hour of applause. Originally trained as a pharmacist in Oslo, she pursued singing as a hobby, making her first professional appearance on Norwegian radio in 1956 and on the stage in 1957. Bjoner was a regular at the Vienna State Opera, Teatro alla Scala, the Metropolitan Opera and the Royal Opera at Covent Garden, among others, and was a popular performer in German opera houses. She retired in 1990 and taught at the Norwegian Academy of Music and Royal Danish Academy of Music. Lightly toned, creased and bowed. Parts of signature have low contrast and are lightly beaded, but are legible. Light creases (not visible head-on) and scratches on image. Rounded and worn corners. Otherwise in fine condition.
