IRA SANKEY

piece of paper attached to 4¾x3¼ card (two surfaces). Ira D. Sankey
(1840-1908) was a gospel singer and composer known as "the Sweet Singer
of Methodism." A Union veteran of the Civil War, he often traveled to
revival meetings in the company of famed evangelist Dwight Moody. Sankey
published a compilation of his religious hymns, Sacred Songs and Solos,
which is still in use. More than seven decades after his death, he was enshrined
in the Gospel Music Hall of Fame (1979). In 1880 and 1881, Moody and Sankey
traveled to the Pacific Coast for a series of revival meetings, using San
Francisco as their base of operations. Lightly soiled. Fine
condition.
