Signed the year Dunne was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for Theodora Goes Wild and appeared in Show Boat. Cary Grant, who starred with actress IRENE DUNNE (1898-1990) in The Awful Truth (1937) and My Favorite Wife (1940), called her the finest comedienne he had ever worked with. Dunne, whose first screwball comedy was Theodora Goes Wild (1936), received Best Actress Academy Award nominations for that film and for Cimarron (1930-1931), The Awful Truth (1937), Love Affair (1939) and I Remember Mama (1948). In 1957, in recognition for her charitable work and interest in conservative political causes, President Dwight D. Eisenhower named Dunne as one of five alternate delegates to the United Nations. In 1936, screenwriter RUPERT RALEIGH HUGHES (1872-1956), the uncle of Howard Hughes, wrote the stories for two films, The President's Mystery and It Had to Happen. Hughes, who had been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 1927-1928 for The Patent Leather Kid, continued writing for films through 1951 (F.B.I. Girl, Fingerprints Don't Lie). Hughes, whose career spanned 60 years, wrote over 60 books, short stories, articles, poems, plays, music and non-fiction books, including a three-volume biography of George Washington. He was also known for his involvement in causes, sometimes controversial ones, such as disputes over the unionization of writers and turning over the names of suspected Communist Party members or sympathizers to the House Un-American Activities Committee.
