Printed photo with ink signature of the intrepid female aviator
Printed Photograph signed in ink: "6-'99 Corporate Pilot/in Cessna 310/Irene H. Leverton". Color, 3½x6. At age 17, Irene Leverton used a friend's birth certificate in a failed attempt to gain admittance to the Women Aviation Service Pilots (WASP) program of World War II. By 1961, however, she had already compiled 9,000 flight hours, with a commercial pilot's license qualified for instrument-only flight. She was one of the Mercury 13, thirteen women selected for astronaut training through the Women in Space program, but NASA abruptly halted that program near its final phase. In 1965, had to abort a planned solo Pacific crossing due to an electrical fire, but made a 7½ hour return to San Francisco without radio or navigation equipment. While continuing to fly many types of aircraft, Leverton founded a consulting firm, and became an authorized FAA air safety counselor. Slightly worn at bottom right corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
