IRENE ZAMBELLI (SILVERMAN)
ALS on letterhead of the Radio City Music Hall Corps de Ballet
Autograph Letter signed: "Irene Zambelli", 2 pages (front and verso). New York City, 1943 February 20. To "Dear Miss Spencer", in full: "I have always been interested in handwritings - but know nothing about it. Tho' I am sure it must portray a likeness of the writer - anxious to receive my analysis - Sincerely". Helen Zambelli (Silverman), 1916-1998, was a member of the Radio City Music Hall Corps de Ballet, which alternated shows with the better known but less talented Rockettes. Working conditions were difficult. From 1943 she performed 4 shows per day, 7 days a week, for $36 dollars per week. She appeared in the Broadway musical Virginia (1937). In 1941 she married Sam Silverman, who was making himself wealthy as a Manhattan realtor. In 1957, the Silvermans purchased a luxury apartment house on the Upper East Side. After Sam's death, Irene operated it herself - part landlady and part house mother to wealthy clients. In 1998, she was murdered by con man Kenneth Kimes, as part of a plot to fraudulently take over ownership of the building. Kimes and his family had staged a murderous crime spree documented in a true crime book, The Mother, the Son and the Socialite, by Adrian Havill. One vertical one horizontal fold creases. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
