IRVIN SHREWSBURY COBB
The American humorist and author writes a typically sarcastic reply to a request for an autograph.
ALS: "Irvin S. Cobb.", 1p, 9½x12. No place, 1917 February 26. To "My Dear Miss Vicker". In full: "When I am asked for my autograph I am so flattered, so overcome with pride and pleasure, that usually I sign myself Gratefully Yours". American author, humorist and columnist Irvin Shrewsbury Cobb (1876-1944) wrote over 60 books, including Paths of Glory (1915), an account of his experiences covering WWI, and 300 short stories. Cobb, who began his journalistic career with the "Paducah Daily News" and the "Louisville Evening Post", moved to New York in 1904. There, he worked for the "Evening Sun" and "New York World" and covered WWI for the "Saturday Evening Post". Cobb's works provided the basis for a number of feature films, and Cobb himself appeared in ten films between 1932 and 1938. He also hosted the 1935 Academy Awards. Ink blot at the lower portion of the "S". Lightly creased with fold, sheet has separated at mid-horizontal fold except for a one-inch portion at blank left margin. ½-inch tear at blank right margin above fold. Lightly soiled and stained. Overall, fair condition.
