IRVING BACHELLER. ALS: "Irving Bacheller", 1p, 5x6. Morningside, New York, no date. On sheet imprinted "Lake Placid Club" to "Dear Mr. Carleton". In full: "This little ck for the cause I had hoped to be able to serve by reading. Best wishes! Yours in haste". Docketed (unknown hand) in pencil on verso: "Authors (sic) Matinee/(Bacheller)". American journalist and writer Addison Irving Bacheller (1859-1950) is credited with creating the first modern newspaper syndicate in the U.S. He began his business, The Bacheller Syndicate, in 1884, supplying specialized articles to Sunday newspapers. In addition to introducing American audiences to such British authors as Joseph Conrad, Arthur Conan Doyle and Rudyard Kipling, Bacheller also serialized The Red Badge of Courage by American author Stephen Crane. His own works include The Master of Silence (1892), Still House of O'Darrow (1894), Eben Holden (1900), Light in the Clearing (1917), A Man for the Ages (1920) and The Winds of God: A Tale of the North Country (1941). The three bolded titles were bestsellers for Bacheller, who also served as a WWI correspondent in France. Lightly creased with fold, touching flourish of the "r" in Bacheller. Pin holes and lightly soiled at left portion, touching one word of writing. Name written (unknown hand) in pencil at upper right margin. Fine condition.
