Privately Printed Book inscribed: "For Harry Ruby-/with affection/from/Irving", 192 pages, 9x12¼. Leatherette soft cover printed in gilt: "Songs From/Irving Berlin's/'Alexander's Ragtime Band'/1938". Page edges are in gilt. The book divides into "New Songs", such as "Now It Can Be Told" and "Old Songs" which include "Alexander's Ragtime Band", "All Alone", "Blue Skies", "Easter Parade" and "Heat Wave". The musical, spanning the years 1915-1938, starred Tyrone Power and Don Ameche battling for Alice Faye's attentions. It also starred Ethel Merman, Jack Haley, John Carradine and Jean Hersholt. Berlin won the 1938 Academy Award for Best Score of Alexander's Ragtime Band. This book was privately printed by Irving Berlin for distribution to his friends. Songwriter HARRY RUBY's works include "Who's Sorry Now?", "Hooray for Captain Spaulding" (Groucho's theme song) and "Three Little Words", which was also the title of the 1950 musical biography of Ruby and his songwriting partner, Bert Kalmar. Signature page shaded at edges. Covers and spine show some wear. Internally sound. Fine condition.
