Leather-bound musical score and lyrics to his Broadway production Louisiana Purchase (1940), signed and inscribed on the blank flyleaf to his friend and fellow songwriter Harry Ruby
Musical Score and Lyrics bound in a book, inscribed and signed: "To Harry Ruby/With my best/Irving Berlin" on blank flyleaf, 61 pages, 9x12. Titled: "Louisiana Purchase/1940". Leatherbound with gilt-edge pages. Imprinted on title page: "B.G DeSylva/Presents/Louisiana Purchase/Music and Lyrics by/Irving Berlin/Book by Morrie Riskind". The Broadway production of Louisiana Purchase opened on May 28, 1940. BUDDY G. DeSYLVA who produced the show, also wrote its story, which focused upon graft and corruption in a fictitious state called "Lou-is-i-an-a". In order to avoid any potential lawsuit from the real state of Louisiana at the time, BERLIN, RISKIND and DeSYLVA presented at the beginning of the show (Act 1), two comical songs whose lyrics include the "any resemblance to actual persons living or dead" disclaimer. The two songs as well as the rest of the musical score and lyrics are found in this book. Songwriters IRVING BERLIN and HARRY RUBY were lifelong friends starting from their Tin Pan Alley days in New York. Ruby's works include "I Wanna Be Loved by You", "Who's Sorry Now?" and "Three Little Words". Berlin wrote more than 1000 songs including "God Bless America," "White Christmas," "Easter Parade" and "There's No Business Like Show Business." Spine and edges worn. Upper edge slightly creased, else fine.
