IRVING BERLIN
America's greatest songwriter.
Plate block of four 4-cent U.S. stamps honoring the 150th anniversary of
Louisiana statehood signed: "Irving Berlin". The Louisiana stamp,
issued on April 30, 1962, pictures a Mississippi Riverboat. The Broadway musical
Louisiana Purchase, music and lyrics by BERLIN, opened at the Imperial
Theatre on May 28, 1940 and ran for 444 performances.
It became a motion picture in 1941. The musical lampoons Huey Long and his
stronghold on Louisiana politics and stars, on stage and screen, Victor Moore as
U.S. Senator Oliver P. Loganberry. Affixed to 4¾x3 board, which has a painted
red border. Glue stains on verso, no show through, tiny chip in upper left
corner of red border. Light glue stains at mid-horizontal and vertical
perforations touching the "B".
