IRVING BERLIN
While promoting his new movie, Alexander's Ragtime Band, Berlin writes to fellow composer Harry Ruby, encouraging him on his new book.
TLS: "Irv", 1p, 7¼x11. No place, 1938 August 11. On his personal letterhead to Harry Ruby, Hollywood, Calif. In full: "Forgive me for delaying so long to answer your letter of July 18th. Between the exploitation on 'ALEXANDER' and the broadcast we did, to say nothing of trying to do some work on the new show, I have been up to my neck and this is the first chance I have really had to write you. I think 'IT CAN'T BE DONE' is swell and I am more than ever convinced that your book will be a big hit. I am crazy about the couplet:- Writing poetry is for those/Who can't express themselves in prose! Please send on any new ones. There is a good chance of me coming on to the coast for about a week next month and if I do, I will look forward to seeing you. 'ALEXANDER' opened here last week and is breaking all kinds of records at the Roxy - and I am naturally very happy about it. Please write me again soon. With love from Ellin and myself to you and Eileen." The motion picture Alexander's Ragtime Band (the title of Berlin's first hit song) had recently opened. Folds, not at signature. Fine condition.
